Hi! I’m Torill. Welcome to my home and thank you for coming over.
I’m sure you are wondering, What is koselig? You’ve probably heard the Danish word hygge that’s sort of taken the design world (and general interwebs) by storm. Well, koselig is the Norwegian equivalent (although Norwegians use hygge, too). My ethnicity is Norwegian, so the principles of koselig were ingrained in me as a child.
When I think of the concept of koselig (pronounced “kooh-suh-lee”), I think of what I like to call the 4 K’s: kozy, kalm, komfort, konnect. There is no direct English translation, although “cozy” comes close. It’s easy to think of it as a feeling—of gratitude, of presence, of warmth and welcoming—that can emanate from just about anything, whether a person or a house or even a conversation. It’s a Norwegian way of living “warm” all year round, which makes sense, since the country can be cold and dark for many months at a time. It’s the goodness in life with a cup of coffee in hand!
My mormor (grandma) was the epitome of koselig. Her home, her clothes, her demeanor evoked a sense of sanctuary. She literally would have a fire burning in August! When building our home, I wanted to imbue our living space with these feelings. Having a wide-open concept to promote conversation and community. Looking to adding a little more koselig into your own home? Here’s how.
Having an open door policy to let in your family, friends and neighbors in is an important way to live life connected to your loved ones. I added a herringbone pattern in our foyer floor to give a bit of warmth to the entrance. I have a lot of work to do on the decorating! More to come on this…
ENJOY A BATH
Light some candles, bubble up the warm water and pour your self a glass (or two) of wine. Time to unwind the koselig way.
Wooden elements, furry blankets or woolen rugs are just a few essential components to mix texture into your environment. Layer them into your living space for leisurely charm. We added wooden beams in our great room for warmth and drama.
INVEST IN CANDLES
Embrace the power of flickering candlelight. Scented, unscented, tapered, tealight, flameless, you name it! A simple lit candle can help create a koselig moment in your home.
My Scandivian family drinks coffee all day. The need to sit back and recognize a comforting moment is more and more prevelant these days. Definetly more koselig to have a steaming cup in hand.
TURN OFF THE PHONES AND PLAY MUSIC
We installed Sonos speakers in many areas of our house, even the bathroom! It adds so much to ambiance anytime of the day. Listen and enjoy either a quiet tune or break out into a dance party (my boys favorite).
Tusen takk, thousand thanks,
